The 2016 Kwagh-hir Fiesta with a theme "Celebration of Creativity" which started on the 11th of February came to an end on the 13th February 2016.
Seven Kwagh-hir groups participated in the event.
The origin of Kwagh-hir as performed
by the Tiv people of central Nigeria, just like the origins of other art forms
in pre-literate societies, will continue to be shrouded in mystery and
researchers subjectivity.
However, a personality considered by
many to be the originator or modifier of the Kwagh-hir Theatre as it is
practiced and performed today is one Adikpo Songo from Akpagher, Mbatyav in the
present Gboko Local Government of Benue State. According to Adikpo Asongo he
brought the art-form to Tiv Land in the form and style as practiced today after
been tutored by the Adzov (Spirits). He had watched similar performances by the
Adzov in the spirit world, when he fell into a trance in the night while
travelling back to his village from Gboko.
I am delighted to have been able with the help of my team to host the Kwagh-hir fiesta 2016 with the theme "Celebration of Creativity" after a very long absence of this very important festival in this State.
I am pleased to congratulate His
Excellency, the Executive Governor, the State Executive Council and the entire Tiv
nation on this occasion of the Tiv Kwagh-hir Festival which has been organized to hold on
11th and 12th February, 2016.As the theme indicates, the festival is a
celebration of creativity and represents an avenue, not only for entertainment
and education, but also to preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Tiv
nation.
