I am pleased to congratulate His
Excellency, the Executive Governor, the State Executive Council and the entire Tiv
nation on this occasion of the Tiv Kwagh-hir Festival which has been organized to hold on
11th and 12th February, 2016. As the theme indicates, the festival is a
celebration of creativity and represents an avenue, not only for entertainment
and education, but also to preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Tiv
nation.
It is pertinent to note that over
the years, the creative industry has grown to become a major economic activity,
contributing significantly to export revenues.
According to the United
Nations Conference on Trade & Development (UNTAD), the world export of
Creative goods and services grew at an annual average of 14% between 2002 –
2008, reaching a peak of $592billion in 2008.
This was in contrast to a drop in international trade by 12% in 2008,
following the global financial and economic crisis. During the recession, the
creative economy continued to thrive as people continued to go to cinema and
museums, listen to music, watch videos and TV shows and play video games.
It is against the background of the foregoing,
coupled withthe high ranking of the creative and entertainment industry in
Nigeria that NEXIM took a strategic decision to increase intervention in the
sector under its export of services programme.
NEXIM’s intervention in the creative industry is through funding and
developmental support such as sponsoring of film festivals and other events
aimed at showcasing Nigeria’s creative talent and developing our human capital.
NEXIM is therefore pleased to identify and
sponsor this festival as part of our efforts to promote the creative sector and
developing the sector to generate more jobs and increase foreign exchange earnings
for the country.
We are quite hopeful that the state government
and indeed the entire people of Benue State will seize the opportunity of this
event not only for education and entertainment, but to also boost the economy
of the state.
